about

HEFT STUDIO is an independent design and craft studio based in East Lothian. It’s run by me, Helena, a nature enthusiast with a love of Scottish timber. My work unites traditional and contemporary workmanship to create beautiful, authentic furniture and homewares.

My furniture is made to order, working closely with clients to create exactly what they want for their homes. However, I also create small batches of homewares from workshop offcuts that I release seasonally via my website shop.

The HEFT ethos can be defined by three things: authenticity, beauty, and sustainability.

AUTHENTIC

My furniture and homewares reflect and respect where they've come from and how they're made. My aesthetic is centred on material-led processes which provide connection to the natural world.

By working with wood, I choose to embrace the elemental and imperfect - indulging asymmetry; letting grain pattern inform shape, create rhythm, and suggest movement.

By incorporating evidence of workmanship, I invite interaction, seeking creative authenticity through texture, tactility, and sensory experience.

BEAUTIFUL

It is my aim to fill people’s homes with beautiful things that I would want to live with; furniture that uplifts and inspires interiors.

Each piece of furniture that leaves the workshop is rigorously thought through and perfected for an individual’s need. It is through this attention to detail and dedicated refinement of design that the beauty of the materials and the aesthetics of everyday function are united. Put simply, good design is beautiful design.

SUSTAINABLE

My design process is led by an understanding and admiration for the natural environment and the traditional skills, processes and materials connected to it.

I am motivated to contribute towards a world in which good quality, well-designed pieces are thoughtfully and sensitively produced. I design for longevity, consciously crafting heirloom pieces that last for generations.

Wherever possible, I use sustainably sourced Scottish grown timber and naturally derived wood finishes.
